Ascham School is a non-denominational day and boarding school, catering for girls from Prep to Year 12.
Situated less than 4kms from the heart of Sydney, Ascham has continued to be a centre of excellence for the education of girls and young women since its foundation in 1886. An Ascham girl will be prepared both academically and personally to meet the demands of the 21st century and is encouraged to develop into a confident, independent, compassionate young woman with a sense of purpose in the world.
Students flourish within our liberal arts curriculum and take advantage of extensive co-curricular offerings, from the performing arts and sport to leadership programs, overseas exchange and social justice opportunities.
Ascham girls, and the women they become, make a significant difference in the world. Former students can be found the world over using this preparation to lead incredibly varied, distinctive lives.
Boarding has been part of Ascham since 1887 and girls continue to forge lifelong friendships within a very special community.
The boarding houses are not an adjunct to the school—rather they are at its heart. Boarding is a home away from home, a place where girls become confident learners, independent thinkers and caring individuals.
The majority of Ascham boarders come from country NSW, with some from Sydney suburbs, interstate and overseas. They live in a number of spacious former homes, providing a family atmosphere, and they enjoy a supervised academic program as well as a comprehensive weekend activity program.
The Dalton Plan allows each girl to develop a rich intellectual life while individual attention from the teachers provides each girl with the support needed to achieve her best. It helps lift and sustain the academic progress of every one of our girls, whatever her abilities and aspirations.
Although Ascham does not hold Open Days, we believe it is essential to visit us in order to truly understand what a special place Ascham is. By visiting, you begin to understand how important the happiness, confidence, and sense of purpose of our students is to us. Please contact our Registrar to organise your visit to Ascham.
Ascham School offers boarding scholarships for girls in Year 7 to Year 10. Ascham Scholarships are means-tested and we welcome applications from girls whose families may require some financial assistance to attend the School.
The Dalton Plan at Ascham is a vibrant, effective and enjoyable way for students to learn and remains the cornerstone of our delivery of the curriculum.
Fundamental to the Dalton Plan is the opportunity for students to learn in small groups, enhanced through one-on-one time with their teachers. The Plan develops the girls' abilities to articulate their needs and become self-directed learners.
In the Senior School girls spend up to half of their academic periods in Studies, where they work either independently or with a teacher, individually or in small groups. The remainder of their time is given to traditional class lessons.
A free choice of academically rigorous subjects, including languages, is offered in timetables to fit in with the girls.
Ascham Scholarships are awarded to girls who will thrive academically and personally through the Dalton Plan and who will in turn make a significant contribution to the life of the School.
Ascham scholarships are awarded to boarders and day girls from Year 7 to Year 10 and are open to both current students and external applicants. Ascham awards up to 15 scholarships annually in the following categories: Music, Academic, All-round Excellence, Boarding, Ascham Old Girls and Indigenous. For more information about scholarships and how to apply, see our website.
With heritage buildings set in spacious grounds, excellent facilities including an indoor pool, gym, tennis courts and playing fields, theatre and studios, libraries and full computer technology, Ascham provides a splendid physical setting for learning and growing.
Co-curricular activities include a broad range of team sports, outstanding music and drama programs, outdoor education expeditions, cultural excursions, interstate and overseas tours. Student exchanges to other countries, community volunteer work and high-level involvement in academic enrichment programs are all features of an Ascham education.
