About the school

Strathcona is an independent school, co-educational in ELC and girls from Prep to Year 12. This year marks Strathcona’s 90th anniversary, a celebration of the School’s rich heritage and 90 years of giving our best. Emphasising competence, confidence and compassion, Strathcona’s mission is to help students build well-balanced foundations for personal and professional success in their adult life.

The School has three campuses, with students spending Year 9 at Tay Creggan, a beautifully renovated, heritage listed building on the Yarra River in Hawthorn. This unique campus, which opened in 1970, was the first in Australia to offer a non-residential off-campus experience for Year 9 students.

The Canterbury Campus, which houses the Senior School, Middle School and the ELC, is well serviced by train, bus and tram and has excellent facilities. The facilities include an Aquatic & Fitness Centre, consisting of a gymnasium, heated indoor pool and training room. The School's specialist Senior Centre caters for VCE students, preparing them for tertiary life. The Creative and Performing Arts Centre has music, art and drama facilities with a food technology laboratory and a multimedia centre with a soundproof recording studio that hosts STV (Strathcona TV). A large open internal performance and exhibition space is the centrepiece of the building.

New Learning Centre

Based on Strathcona’s Strategic Plan 2011 – 2015, the School has strengthened its commitment to delivering a future-focused, innovative and challenging curriculum that is supported by world-class facilities. As a result, construction of a new Learning Centre is well underway incorporating a Knowledge Exchange area including Library, IT and audio-visual facilities, a new Middle School Centre for Year 7 & 8 students and six state-of-the-art Science laboratories.

The purpose built Junior School (Prep – Year 6) is located in close proximity to the Senior campus. This Junior facility includes a library, curriculum extension area, art room, multi-purpose activity room, music room and individual music studios for instrumental lessons.

The Early Learning Centre at Strathcona caters for 3 and 4 year-old sessional kindergarten as well as the popular full-time Pre-Prep classes. Small classes allow staff to cater for the individual needs of each child.

Curriculum

There is an extensive choice of subjects, with the VCE program offering all prerequisites for tertiary courses. Students are encouraged to understand their individual learning styles, to develop their thinking strategies and to explore interdisciplinary links through special programs, for example, in Year 7 and 8 – the SEED Program (Seek Engage Enhance Diversify) and I-Learning (Interdisciplinary, Interactive, Inquiry) in Year 9. Languages offered are French, Italian and Mandarin.

Co-curricular Program

There is a comprehensive co-curricular program including music, sport, drama, dance and public speaking. All students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities to assist in the development of life skills – our membership with groups like Girls Sport Victoria (GSV) is testament to this. House competitions in sport, music, dance and drama offer opportunities for senior students to participate and develop teamwork and leadership skills.

Interstate and international exchanges enrich the students’ education with a global perspective.

Pastoral Care

Pastoral care plays an important role at Strathcona with personal, social and spiritual development nurtured. There is a sense of family with many cross-age links amongst the students and close ties between home and school.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT)

Outstanding computer facilities including class sets of MacBooks and iPads as well as interactive whiteboards and internet access to ‘Blackboard’, the online learning management system, support a 21st century learning environment. This ensures all students are able to utilise interactive technology to communicate effectively.
