Welcome to Melbourne Montessori College - Caulfield Campus

Melbourne Montessori College (MMC) is a highly regarded, thriving independent school with two Melbourne campuses in Brighton and Caulfield.

Our Caulfield Campus caters for children from the age of 18 months up to Year 3.

In Melbourne Montessori College’s Junior School, multi-age classrooms allow each child to learn from others and develop at their own pace, both socially and intellectually.

Children usually stay with the same teacher for three years, creating strong teacher-student bonds and allowing each educator to develop a deep understanding of each and every student’s unique characteristics, interests and strengths.

From 3-year-old Kindergarten to Year 6, our Montessori Junior School in Melbourne recognises how children naturally learn and supports them to develop independence, confidence and a lifelong love of learning.

Montessori Learning

The Montessori classroom provides children with an environment that is meticulously crafted to meet their evolving needs and where they can naturally work and explore. The classroom becomes a sanctuary for spontaneous and purposeful activities, guided by trained educators.

Through their work, children develop concentration, self-discipline and joy. Within a framework of order, they progress at their own pace, embracing their individual capabilities and rhythms of learning.

Parent and Toddler Group

This program is to cater for our youngest students and is a gentle introduction to Montessori education and practices where a parent or caregiver attends the session with the child. Each session is for 2 hours, from 9:30 - 11:30. The children work with a Montessori coordinator and parents learn to guide their child's work in keeping with Montessori philosophy. This program offers parents an opportunity to learn about Montessori education and to engage with other parents on other issues of parenting through discussion and sharing of ideas.

Early Learners

The Early Learners Program recognises that the first three years of life are fundamental in the development of human beings and their potential. The child’s physical development is phenomenal and apparent and inspires our care and attention. Yet a profound and less obvious development is taking place within the child. Maria Montessori refers to development in this period as the spiritual embryo. She believed that a second embryonic period occurred after birth, during the first three years of life, when the child’s intelligence is formed. This is the time the child acquires the culture and language into which he or she is born. It is the period when the core of personality, social being and the essence of spiritual life are developed.

Our Montessori teachers in this area of the school are trained to understand the child’s development and the development of the human mind, which allows them to prepare the learning environment to meet the needs of the child.

Materials are set out in an ordered manner on low, open shelves. All activities aim to foster independence and support psycho-motor development and language acquisition.

Cycle 1(3 and 4-year-old Kinder, Prep)

Cycle 1 is a comprehensive three-year program for children aged three to six that encompasses kindergarten and Foundation (Prep). It is rooted in the Montessori curriculum that seamlessly integrates the Australian Early Years Learning Framework and the National Montessori Curriculum, providing a cohesive educational experience.

The Cycle 1 and the three to six years mixed age group is considered as the first Plane of Development where the absorbent mind thrives and the joy of learning takes hold. Between three to six years, children continue the process of self-construction, consolidating, refining and adding to the skills and knowledge accumulated before the age of three.

From the age of three, children become conscious of what they are learning through their own freely chosen activity, especially activity with their hands.

During the formative years up to the age of six, children possess what Dr Maria Montessori called an ‘absorbent mind.’ Research consistently demonstrates that a child’s capacity for learning is unparalleled during this period and children effortlessly and enjoyably acquire knowledge and develop essential skills.

THE PROGRAM

For this age group, Montessori environments provide children with motives for activity through which they refine perception, movement and language, and become independent in everyday life.

The extensive repertoire of meticulously designed Montessori materials and exercises offered to children represent a learning programme with an incremental progression of activities. Within this framework, children are free to choose their own work, once they have been shown how to use the materials and do the exercises.

Cycle 2 (Years 1-3)

Discover a transformative approach to education with passionate educators who foster independence, responsibility and a global perspective. In the Montessori Method, students take charge of their own learning and participate in activities that cultivate essential 21st-century skills.

Cycle 2 encompasses a mixed age range of Years 1, 2 and 3. Younger students learn from older peers, and older students reinforce their knowledge by teaching concepts to the younger ones, creating a supportive, motivated and inspirational community.

At this stage of development, students crave socialisation and small group lessons and follow-up work within small groups nurtures positive relationships.

THE PROGRAM

In Cycle 2, concentration and independence fostered in Cycle 1 supports the child’s learning journey as they go deeper and work on tasks collaboratively.

Between six and nine years of age, students embark on the second Plane of Development, a phase characterised by their longing for intellectual autonomy and the cultivation of ethics and social accountability.

Educators follow the Montessori National Curriculum, which is approved by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA).

Educators deliver the Montessori curriculum while supporting students to meet and explore the expected benchmarks for their age outlined by ACARA.

With support and guidance from teachers when needed, students explore wide-ranging, inquiry-based lessons ranging from the birth of the universe to the details of English grammar.
