Welcome to ELTHAM College

ELTHAM is a school like no other. We’re constantly adapting to the changing needs of young people and their world. We support them on their learning journey to unlock their talents through one of Victoria’s broadest curriculums. Most importantly, our teachers guide each young person to become empowered with the self-confidence and independence to manage all aspects of their future lives.

We aim for our graduates to step into life after school as proactive young people, equipped with the skills and desire to continue successful learning.

Not only do we make learning exciting and relevant to life, we also create a liberating environment where teachers and students share trust and friendship and work together in mutual respect.

Our culture is also about teaching self-discipline. We do not have a one-size fits all policy, but instead foster a culture and program that works with each individual, that empowers them to own their behaviour, be accountable and develop as resilient young men and women.

Education Philosophy

At ELTHAM we aim to ensure that our young people can relate to their world, understand their effect on it and use their creativity to help shape it in positive ways. We ensure that young people are nurtured, can aim high in life, continue learning, form successful relationships, juggle the demands of life, achieve independence and greet opportunities with confidence.

We promote harmonious student-teacher partnerships and value parent participation as true education partners. Our co-educational environment creates equal opportunities for girls and boys to be successful individually and together.

We believe that everyone can achieve excellence. We equip young people with skills in self-management. We foster creativity and risk - to allow young people to learn without fear of failure. We also develop problem-solving skills to build confidence and encourage positive actions and a ‘can do’ attitude. All of this combines to ensure that each ELTHAM graduate leaves the College with the skills, knowledge and determination to succeed in the changing world.

That is our number one focus; making sure our young people are WORLD READY. That’s why schooling at ELTHAM is built on a culture that champions not only get the right answers, but ask the right questions – prizing individual expression, innovative thinking and the development of dispositions that promote lifelong learning.

Early & Junior Years

Our Early Learning Centre (ELC) provides an educational environment which nurtures in all children the opportunity to develop the desire and skills to be lifelong learners. We recognise that children are strong, competent and resourceful. They are social beings full of imagination and curiosity, always questioning and seeking meaning. Children have the ability to reflect upon and contribute to their own learning through many different ‘languages’ of communication and expression.

Our 3 and 4 year old kindergarten programs operate from 8.45am to 3.15pm with options for 2 to 5 days of attendance. Our ELC offers a nurturing learning environment where children‘s own natural rhythms are valued and respected. We are committed to sharing children’s experience, culture and learning with their family, supporting and establishing reciprocal relationships between the home and the Early Learning Centre.

Our Junior Years Program (Prep - Year 6) provides an environment where the natural creativity and curiosity of young people is encouraged and developed. We provide opportunities for our young people to confidently establish their concept of the world, and how they contribute to it, providing them the freedom to respectfully voice their ideas and opinions.

We recognise the importance of a strong start in literacy and numeracy, while being equally committed to inspiring our young people to learn through creativity, imagination and experience. Our programs are deliberately developed to integrate the essential skills of literacy and numeracy into a wide range of experiences, to ensure the learning is meaningful and constructive.

Middle Years (Year 7 - 8)

Our learning approach integrates the principal learning areas so that they are relevant to the world of young people and engage them in stimulating ways so that when they come to make subject choices for the senior years they are ready. Science is a wonderful example of this. ELTHAM students won the NSW Education Department’s National Challenge, “Murder Under the Microscope”, in 2012. They know the value of science to themselves and to the community.

Young people study literacy and numeracy, the sciences, the humanities, the arts, languages and physical wellbeing but they do it in exciting ways. Literacy, for example, engages all young people in “doing Shakespeare” and their performances are inspiring!

City Campus (Year 9)

ELTHAM’s City Experience consolidates learning from the Middle Years to provide a strong preparation leading into the independence and responsibility of the Senior Years. This special program has been designed to respond to the learning and social needs of young people at a time when they are navigating their way to adulthood.

The City Experience challenges students’ personal and academic development, and offers a wonderful opportunity for students to be active citizens. An understanding about the value of ownership and accountability is fostered and key steps are taken towards greater maturity and life-long learning.

Senior Years (Year 10 to 12)

The journey through Senior Years at ELTHAM is when all previous learning, self-discovery and life experiences culminate to help shape the futures of our young people. Our focus is to help each individual develop a clear sense of who they are, whilst equipping them to participate in the changing world.

Our Senior Years program is dedicated to guiding young men and women to graduate as mature adults – confident of their abilities and well prepared for the demands and excitement of the next stage in their lives. Our senior students are encouraged to make decisions, accept responsibility and manage their time. With the support expertise of our staff, they can develop skills for self-directed learning; ensuring they are ready for success in tertiary education and employment.

ELTHAM’s Senior Years program offers flexibility and choice – with students able to customise their Senior Years to suit their aspirations, needs and abilities.
