St Augustine's College (Saints) - Cairns

Welcome to the St Augustine’s College (Saints)

Our Catholic college has been specialising in boys education since 1930 and is part of the worldwide network of Marist schools.

Alongside our contemporary learning experiences we strive, in an atmosphere akin to a loving family, to ensure that each student is valued, that he enjoys his time with us, and that he becomes familiar with the principles that are the bedrock of everything we do.

Those principles are based on teachings of St Marcellin Champagnat who founded the Marist Brothers in 1817.

Our Facilities

Saints is blessed with modern facilities that allow our students to explore an array of curriculum-based learning areas as well as take part in many cultural and sporting co-curricular activities. In and out of the classroom our purpose-built facilities offer students the latest equipment and work spaces.

Junior and Senior Schools

JUNIOR SCHOOL:
Students explore and extend themselves in their learning for both academic and life outcomes as well as become more mobile and self-reliant as they study a variety of subjects based on the National Curriculum. Boys are given the opportunity to extend their talents by participating in specialist lessons, enrichment activities and sports outside of the core curriculum.

SENIOR SCHOOL:
Students explore new areas of study and select elective units covering a range of subjects from a wide variety of disciplines. Senior students are encouraged to make decisions about their learning pathways, further developing their interests and skills, flexibility of mind, strength of character, an innate drive to serve others, be mentors to our younger students, and are encouraged to have personal integrity that will inform them through life.

Whether students plan to undertake tertiary studies or head directly into the workforce, our senior school program allows each senior student to work towards achieving his individual goals and navigate his future career.

Co-Curricular & Speciality Subjects

We offer a wide variety of specialty subjects: Design, Engineering, Industrial Graphics Skills, Certificate I in Construction, Certificate II in Engineering Pathways and Applied Information Communication Technology at senior level. In Years 9 and 10 we offer technology electives in Design, Digital and Food. Students especially interested in hospitality can complete Certificate II in Kitchen Operations in Years 11 and 12.
And in the senior years, there is Film, Television and New Media. In this subject students can make short films, study direction as well as the Australian and independent film industries and foreign language films.

SPORT:
Sport is synonymous with the Saints experience, encouraging boys to discover personal strength borne of competition and camaraderie. The College is committed to the ongoing development of all sports and is particularly keen to see all participants, across all ability levels, developing and improving their sporting skills, sport-specific fitness and team spirit.

Our teams compete each week in inter-school competitions. Students not involved in representative sports are offered a wide variety of recreational activities.

Competing within the CISSA sporting competition (in senior school) and JSS (in junior school), Saints students can participate in many sports with pathways to regional, state and national levels.

St Augustine’s is committed to providing extensive opportunities for all students and offers sporting and co-curricular activities including:

Athletics, AFL, Basketball, Chess, Cricket, Cross-Country, Football, Futsal, Hockey, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Swimming, Tennis, Touch Football, Sailing, Surf Life Saving, Volleyball

The Arts

MUSIC:
All students are encouraged to be involved in a variety of musical activities across many styles and genres. Our ensembles have successfully participated in numerous performances, national tours, camps and competitions as well as playing a vital role in the cultural and liturgical life of the College.

DRAMA:
St Augustine's College offers students the opportunity to be involved in different kinds of theatre productions. With different genres of theatre covered there is something for everyone: acting, directing, script writing and back stage technical theatre experiences. Saints combines with St Monica’s College to present a triennial theatre production.

VISUAL ARTS:
Moving through each curriculum stage students investigate several art-making forms: ceramics, photography, painting, printmaking, digital media, drawing and film. These allow for a broad range of hands-on learning experiences in various art making skills and techniques. Specialist Visual Arts teachers inspire our boys and challenge them to explore and respond to the world in which they live.

Full-time or Weekly Boarding

At St Augustine's, we offer Full-time or Weekly Boarding options to our boys and girls, who come from near and far: from the suburbs of Cairns, to the remote areas of Queensland, from interstate and overseas.

While girls are educated at St Monica's, their boarding program is the responsibility of St Augustine's. They live in separate accommodation, at Chavoin Residence in the care of live-in female staff. Girls and boys gather for meals and organised recreation and other activities, and follow a similar evening and weekend schedule. The girls have access to the College’s extensive facilities such as the student resource centre, the music centre, gym and swimming pool.
