About Glenaeon Rudolf Steiner School

Sydney’s Glenaeon Rudolf Steiner School was the first Steiner school established in Australia, in 1957.

Today the school has grown to occupy three campuses on the leafy, lower North Shore: a long-daycare Preschool at Willoughby; Class K-2 at Castlecrag and Class 3 – Year 12 at Middle Cove.

For over 60 years, Glenaeon has helped children and young adults find meaning and direction in their lives. Through a considered balance of academic, aesthetic, artisan, altruistic and active wilderness/outdoor education we equip students with the foundation they need to lead a life of character and contribution.

Five Foundations of Education

Academic Excellence:
Glenaeon provides a rigorous education that takes the growing child through a broad and inspiring range of subjects, meets all requirements for the Board of Studies, and produces excellent results in Year 12, including the HSC.

Aesthetic:
A rich program of Creative and Performing Arts for all students in Drama, Music, Art, and Eurythmy.

Artisan:
A creative program developing 'intelligent hands' though Technology, Wood and Metal crafts, Ceramics and Textiles: we experience our humanity through the useful and beautiful things we make and use.

Active Wilderness:
A resilience-building program of sport, camps and outdoor challenges in nature, as well as caring for the earth though our biodynamic garden and bush regeneration projects.

Altruistic:
A program building a culture of respect and responsibility through:
* classes that are also learning communities
* a school discipline policy fostering self-discipline and respect for others
* service projects for the community.

Above all we provide an education that enables each student to begin on the path of self discovery: our well-rounded education takes a journey through the story of humanity, one that fosters a global and compassionate worldview taking its impulse from the classical ideal of 'Know Thyself'.

We invite you to explore our grounds, our education and our approach to raising fulfilled young people.

Early Childhood - Preschool and Kindergarten

We have Parent Child groups from babyhood to school entry. Playgroups run for familes with children from birth to age 4. Our preschool caters for 3, 4 and 5 year olds and the Kindergarten caters for 5 and 6 year olds in environments that allow the children to learn through imitation and with activities that highlight creativity, practicality and beauty through a rhythmic schedule of practical and artistic activities supported by creative play.

Young children learn through doing: in the Preschool and Kindergarten they experience imaginative stories and learn social literacy skills; they learn to bake, sew, finger knit, make paper crafts and more, providing a foundation for both practical competency and maths. They bushwalk weekly building bodily strength and reverence for nature; they celebrate seasonal festivals becoming aware of the earth’s changing nature, building a respect for science.

Primary school curriculum

In the early primary years, a deep introduction to literacy, numeracy, history and science is made by immersing each student in the rich and imaginative world of story, poetry and song. This approach of thematic studies, an integrated curriculum, and an immersion in aural and visual beauty, cultivates in each child a strong inner imaginative capacity. The capacity of imagination – a very powerful cognitive tool – will form the foundation for future creativity, problem solving and innovation in adult life.approach of thematic studies, an integrated curriculum, and an immersion in aural and visual beauty, cultivates in each child a strong inner imaginative capacity.

High School

Our High School curricula has been designed with needs of the developing student in mind. Year by year, following the developmental stages of childhood, the curriculum mirrors an individual’s inner development allowing for the educational experience to be experienced to its full potential. In addition to providing a balanced Steiner education, Glenaeon complys with all aspects of the Board of Studies curriculum and students consistently score well in the HSC and other standardised tests.
